Our Need for Spiritual Disciplines
Aren’t Christians supposed to “let go and let God”? Also, isn’t all this talk of discipline indicative of another form of salvation by works? Answer in Greek, “Not”. Welcome to the Spiritual Disciplines Course offering at OGC.
The goal of the Spiritual Disciplines course is to encourage and equip Christians in their striving for holiness. The writer in the Hebrews calls us to “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). First Timothy adds; “Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Tim. 4:7–8). Striving and training sound like a call to tremendous exertion and effort, not to mention the thoughts conjured up by the word “discipline.” However, the goal of this Spirit driven training and striving (i.e., Christ likeness) changes it from potential drudgery to an exciting drama/journey.
The road to Christian maturity and godliness is paved with the practice of personal and corporate disciplines that promote spiritual growth. Jesus modeled them for us and expects our diligent joyful pursuit.
The course will be scripture saturated, and will explain what Spiritual Disciplines are, and how practicing them is vital to our sanctification.
Eleven specific Spiritual Disciplines will be discussed, they are as follows:
Bible Intake (2 sessions)
Prayer, Stewardship
Worship, Fasting
Evangelism, Silence and Solitude
Service, Journaling,
Learning.
Please join us in the joyful pursuit of our loving Savior through these means.
